16/12/2021
The “Academic Exchange Seminar on NSFC-FDCT Joint Funding Projects” hosted by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and the National Natural Science Foundation Committee (NSFC) was held online on December 15. President of the Administrative Committee of FDCT Chan Wan Hei and Director of Office for the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the NSFC Zhang Yongtao respectively led a total of 41 experts from the two places, who are the main persons in charge of the joint funding projects approved by the two parties in 2018, to attend the seminar. During the seminar, the experts reported on the progress of their cooperative research and carried out academic exchanges, covering various fields including traditional Chinese medicine, precision medicine, biomedicine, artificial intelligence, environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, and space science.

Director Zhang Yongtao indicated in his speech that NSFC has been cooperating with FDCT since 2005 and the two parties formally signed a memorandum to establish a joint funding mechanism in 2016. Over the years, great progress has been made in the cooperation between the two places, and the scale and amount of joint funding have also been increasing, which will be further enhanced next year. It is expected that the participating experts will carry out exchange on their research progress and results through this seminar, and point out actual difficulties and problems encountered during the projects implementation and scientific research. In the future, the NSFC will continue to promote and deepen the cooperation between the two parties in order to contribute to the enhancement of the technology and prosperity of Macao.

President Chan Wan Hei expressed thanked NSFC for providing strong support over the years as the two parties maintained close cooperation with each other and made great strides in joint funding, academic exchanges, and mutual visits. In recent years, the number of applications for joint funding projects has been increasing. More than 80 applications have also been received within this year, representing an approval rate of less than 20%. Through communication, the two parties will foster their support next year, enabling more projects of high quality to receive funding. In addition, the seminar serves as a platform for Macao and Mainland experts to share results and deliver exchange and understand the effect of joint funding, and it is also hoped that this event can bring about more substantive cooperation.
