With the Successful Conclusion of the “Science and Technology Week”, An Industry-University-Research Collaboration Platform Has Been Built to Foster the Transformation of Scientific Research Achievements

The three-day “Science and Technology Week 2021 cum Exhibition of Achievements in Science and Technology Innovation” (hereinafter referred to as the Science and Technology week) which coincides with the MIF concluded successfully today (December 12, 2021), bringing together different links in the scientific and technological innovation chain, promoting Macao's scientific and technological innovation and achievement transformation, and facilitating the effectiveness of the industry-university-research collaboration platform.

The “Science and Technology Week”, which has been held for 14 times since 2005, is an annual and large-scale event to promote science and technology in Macao. The event coincided with the Macao International Trade & Investment Fair (MIF) for the first time to create a synergistic effect.

The “Science and Technology Week” has an exhibition area of 3500 square meters, with nearly 200 booths having been set up, which attracts more than 140 entities to participate. The event is divided into four exhibition zones, respectively the Technology and Innovation Enterprises Zone; the Scientific Research Results Transformation Zone; the Interactive Technology Exhibition Zone; and the Science and Technology Promotion Zone, and each of them is composed of different participating entities with unique characteristics.

The participating entities are mainly from Macao and are at different stages of the scientific and technological innovation chain, such as teams of scientific research projects with prospects for transformation from higher education institutions; excellent teams in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition; potential new science and technology enterprises; and mature science and technology enterprises.

Over a hundred matchmaking sessions carried out to encourage scientific research projects of Macao to match with technology enterprises and capital in the Greater Bay Area

Jointly organized with the China Science and Technology Exchange Center (CSTEC) and the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (GDSTC), the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) ran the “Industry-University-Research Collaboration Roadshow and Matchmaking Meeting Between Mainland China and Macao” for the first time, in which over 50 enterprises and investors from cities of the Greater Bay Area and other cities and provinces were arranged for a visit Macao to see roadshows of 29 scientific research achievements of Macao with prospects for transformation, and to take part in more than a hundred matchmaking sessions, enabling in-depth exchanges of talents, technologies, resources and scientific research achievements between the two places, driving public capital to high-quality scientific research projects in Macao, and thereby realizing technology transfer and transformation of scientific research achievements.

 

 
Equal emphasis on scientific research and industry, exhibiting 127 completed scientific research projects

A variety of supporting activities were organized during the "Science and Technology Week”, of which the “Macao Science, Technology and Innovation Forum 2021” was divided into the two parts, respectively themed as “How Enterprises Can Accommodate the Needs of Strategic Development of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin” and “Exploring the Path to Scientific and Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship”. Through the discussion, sharing and exchanges between well-known scholars and enterprise representatives from Macao and the Mainland, participants’ understanding of the major opportunities for enterprises presented by the development of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin has been deepened, and a valuable lesson has also been provided for young people interested in embarking on the path of “entrepreneurship and innovation”.

“The Exhibition for Scientific Research Project Completion and Academic Report Conference 2020” is an annual event of the FDCT to show the results of completed scientific research projects and report the funding details of the FDCT to the public, providing opportunities of exchange for scientific researchers and deepening the participants’ understanding on the cutting-edge scientific research strength of Macao. A total of 127 scientific research projects ended in 2020 were displayed at the event, in which experts and scholars were invited to deliver two themed speeches and 8 scientific research project leaders were invited to introduce their research results.

The Industry-University-Research Collaboration Platform Brings About the Upgrading and Transformation of Enterprises

By gathering representatives of many scientific research institutions and science and technology enterprises, FDCT has set up booths to promote the “Funding Scheme for Industry-University-Research Partnership for Enterprises” and “Online Industry-University-Research Matching Platform” launched earlier, and provided “Online + Offline” industry-university-research matching services to help enterprises to resolve issues including insufficient funds and lack of technical solutions arising from the process of overcoming technical problems. Through the modal of funding plus matching services, FDCT also hopes to support the upgrading and transformation of enterprises in Macao and promote the implementation of scientific research achievements and solutions.

Promoting the transformation of scientific research achievements and industry-university-research collaboration is one of the long-term and continuous efforts of FDCT. With the simultaneous implementation of various measures, FDCT’s efforts have gradually turned into positive outcomes, the scientific research achievements of a number of funded projects have been successfully transformed and implemented, and the signing ceremony of the industry-university-research collaboration agreement also takes place during the “Science and Technology Week”.

The event was strongly supported by local and Mainland units such as China Science and Technology Exchange Center (CSTEC), Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT), Education and Youth Development Bureau (DESDJ), Parafuturo de Macau Investment and Development Limited, Macao Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre (MYEIC) and many other higher education institutions in Macao.
