Comprehensive Safety Monitoring System for Smart Community Elevators
29/07/2024
In modern cities and communities, elevators as a means of vertical transportation have become an urban public infrastructure that is widely used and indispensable in people's work and life. It is of great significance to raise the comprehensive safety standard of equipment, like elevators, which has the characteristics of highly intense use, high safety requirements, and high-density space. Considering that conventional safety monitoring methods face problems such as low maintenance efficiency, incompatible data silos, potential safety hazards, and insufficient intelligence, the scientific and technological community has carried out research and development of intelligent safety monitoring and operations and maintenance (O&M) technology for elevators.

With support from the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), Professor
Zhixin Yang  from the University of Macau has led a scientific research team to conduct theoretical and applied research on intelligent fault diagnosis, health monitoring, and O&M of electromechanical equipment over the years. On this basis, the team has developed a vertical transportation safety monitoring and health management system based on the Internet of Things (IoT). With respect to the safety monitoring of the core electromechanical components of elevators, it has created an edge trigger mechanism for clustering state analysis and an integrated IoT architecture for remote comprehensive monitoring, designed a wireless sensor to achieve dynamic collection and multi-modal perception, drawn a standardized fault knowledge graph, and proposed a compound fault diagnosis algorithm based on graph neural networks. As for elevator use safety, the team has built a monitoring and early warning system for abnormal behaviors of passengers in elevator cars. Combined with target detection technology, the system makes real-time monitoring of the use safety of elevator car interiors possible.

The project has received strong support from Zhuhai Huafa Group. Its results are well proved for applications to the elevators currently used by Huafa Group. An IoT edge computing monitoring and validation platform has been established, with elevator car use safety monitored in a multi-dimensional fashion. At present, the plan for the project's results to be applied in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin has been validated, and the arrangement of smart monitoring technology implementation in Hengqin is underway to support smart community building in Hengqin and ensure the "safety of the last 100 meters to work and home". Additionally, the project won one national grand prize at the 18th "Challenge Cup" for national college students.
