Autonomous Takeoff and Landing System for Ship-borne Drones
18/07/2024
Drone operations on the sea face challenges posed by wind direction, wind speed, ship movement, and other uncertainties at sea. Therefore, the key issue of autonomous drone navigation needs to be solved for marine operations in order to achieve the best takeoff and landing performances.

With support from the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), Macau Kou Lok Intelligent Drone Systems Co., Ltd. (the "Company") has conducted research on automatic drone charging nests, precision landing algorithms of drones in indoor environments, and cloud platforms for robot scheduling. The achievements made have been integrated into and applied in new offshore scenarios to ensure reliable operation against the uncertain, raging winds and waves in the sea.

With a view to future R&D and business development, the Company has settled in Hengqin and secured cooperation with a number of companies in the industry with Macao as the R&D base, raising the scientific research results to enterprise-level standards. The project at the moment involves the research and development of control algorithms, the assessment of network security for software, and offshore validation on board. Among them, the research and development of control algorithms is the responsibility of the Company's scientific research team, the assessment of network security for software is carried out in cooperation with technology companies in Hengqin and listed on the main board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, and as for the offshore validation on board, the Company cooperates with Zhuhai "Yunzhou Intelligence Technology".

According to Lai Chi Kin, the Company's CEO who is in charge of the project, the ship-borne drone system researched and developed by the scientific research team is a consumer-grade shipboard product for users around the globe. Its target customers are operators of sightseeing ships and cruise ships, and owners of private yachts. The ship-borne drone system is an out-of-the-box shipboard fitting. After customers install the system on their ships, they can enjoy a fully automatic aerial photography experience at sea. The autonomous takeoff and landing system is currently under on-site offshore validation in preparation for the global product launch in November 2024.
