Macao Research Experts and Teams Receive Four Prestigious National Science and Technology Honors
27/07/2026
Between May and July this year, experts and teams from Macao’s State Key Laboratories and other research institutes were honored with four national science and technology awards, injecting new momentum into the city’s sci-tech development. These accolades not only recognize years of dedication by local researchers but also reflect the steady progress of Macao’s scientific research capabilities. Looking ahead, the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) remains committed to empowering Macao’s research community. By prioritizing talent development and the transformation of research outcomes, it will continue to leverage technology and innovation to promote Macao’s appropriate economic diversification.

First Hong Kong-Macao Team to Receive the National Award for Excellence in Innovation (Group Award)
In May, winners of a major national sci-tech talent award – established with the approval of the Central Government and ranking second only to the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award – were announced. Macao’s State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (SKLPlanets) was honored with the 4th National Award for Excellence in Innovation (Group Medal). Presented every three years, this award recognizes individuals and teams with outstanding contributions to sci-tech innovation, technological breakthroughs, transformation of research outcomes, and science popularization. Among only nine groups nationwide to receive this group award this year, the team is also the first from Hong Kong and Macao to achieve this distinction.

Macao-Guangzhou Joint Research Project Wins Second Prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award
At the National Science and Technology Award Conference, the general assemblies of the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and the 11th national congress of the China Association for Science and Technology, which were held in early July, Professor Zhu Yizhun, Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology and Director of the Laboratory for Drug Discovery from Natural Resource (R&D Center), participated in a project on the “Development and Application of an Innovative Technology System for Elucidating the Mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine Based on Efficacy-Related Substances”, led by Professor Liu Zhongqiu of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. The project received the Second Prize for the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, making it one of three award-winning TCM-related projects this year, which highlights the collaborative research achievements between Macao and its GBA partners at the frontiers of TCM science.

Two Macao Experts Among 40 National Awardees
The list of winners for the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award was also announced recently. Established by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and presented biennially, this award celebrates Chinese engineering and technology experts who have made significant contributions and achieved outstanding accomplishments in engineering science, technology, and management. Among the 40 national awardees this year, two scholars from Macao were honored: Professor Mak Pui In, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, and Professor Xu Chengzhong, Chair Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City.
Since last year, Macao’s science and technology sector has accelerated its development. In August last year, the four State Key Laboratories received approval for their restructuring and were officially inaugurated and put into operation. The relevant research teams have closely aligned their work with national sci-tech priorities while making substantial strides in transforming research outcomes. Partnerships between Macao enterprises and research teams have enabled full-chain collaboration for health and wellness products, from laboratory development and local manufacturing to market launch. Additionally, two Macao-invested technology companies were listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in the first half of this year.

Moving forward, the FDCT will continue to enhance its support and services in research talent development, outcome transformation, and the development of innovation platforms. Taking these latest awards as a new starting point, it will work hand-in-hand with Macao’s research community to embrace the broader GBA and national development strategies while remaining rooted in Macao. By actively promoting closer integration between research resources and industrial chains and embedding local research outcomes into the national innovation ecosystem, the FDCT is committed to contributing Macao’s unique strengths to building an international science and technology innovation hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
