The Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (GDSTC) have been running a joint funding scheme since 2019, which has yielded a number of outstanding research outcomes with international visibility. The scheme’s performance has been well recognized within the Guangdong-Macao research community, and the number of project applications has been on the rise. On June 23, the joint review meeting for the 2026 collaborative research projects was held in Guangzhou, with representatives from the FDCT and GDSTC joining expert reviewers to evaluate the projects. Mr. U U Sang, President of the FDCT Administrative Committee, noted that a total of 178 research project applications were received this year, of which 150 were confirmed as valid by both parties. These projects were jointly proposed by Macao’s higher education institutions, research teams, and their Guangdong-based partners, covering areas such as big health, high and new technology, and AI-empowered real economy, all aligned with Macao’s push for adequate economic diversification. The portfolio also includes highly innovative research projects exploring frontier scientific fields.
Guangdong-Macao science and technology cooperation ushering in unprecedented opportunities
During the meeting, President U U Sang emphasized that Guangdong-Macao science and technology cooperation is growing increasingly close and holds great potential. In November 2025, the first two Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratories led by Macao research institutions were officially inaugurated in Macao, advancing the “R&D in Macao + transformation in Hengqin” model. This year, Macao’s higher education institutions began operating their research and teaching facilities in Hengqin, further strengthening industry-university-research collaboration between the two sides. More significantly, the 15th Five-Year Plan, released in March this year, specifically outlines the development of an international science and technology innovation center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the creation of a world-class hub for scientific and technological innovation. These developments present unprecedented opportunities for Guangdong-Macao science and technology cooperation.
The joint review meeting was conducted in a professional, fair, and impartial manner, with the aim of deepening the review experts’ understanding of the proposed projects, thereby facilitating the selection of high-caliber projects for joint funding. The implementation of the joint funding scheme seeks to foster closer industry-university-research collaboration between the two regions, while also enhancing the capabilities of universities, enterprises, research institutions, and researchers on both sides, thus sustaining the momentum of Guangdong-Macao scientific and technological innovation.
