The “Hong Kong-Macao Seminar on Climate Change Assessment” Macao session, co-hosted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) of Macao, was held on March 29. The seminar brought together NSFC Vice President Lan Yujie and around 30 experts and scholars from various provinces and cities across the mainland and Macao SAR.
Taking this opportunity to showcase the potential in Macao’s technological development to the visiting guests, U U Sang, President of FDCT’s Administrative Committee, briefed attendees on the latest trends and future outlook of Macao’s science and technology sector. This helped participants from the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao gain a better understanding of the city’s research environment, and ultimately contributed to the development of the international innovation and technology hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
NSFC continues to support research in Hong Kong and Macao
In his remarks, NSFC Vice President Lan Yujie noted that the integration of climate governance in Hong Kong and Macao into the national assessment system reflects the premium that the Central Government places on research in this field. As a key part of the GBA, Macao has made notable progress in reducing carbon emissions. The NSFC will continue to support research efforts in Hong Kong and Macao, helping both regions align with national strategic priorities and serve regional sustainable development.
The seminar focused on the preparation of the Hong Kong and Macao section for the Fifth National Assessment Report on Climate Change, with the goal of deepening research coordination among the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao, exploring technology-driven strategies to address climate change, and providing scientific support for Macao’s efforts to tackle climate change and develop a more livable city.
This seminar marked the first in the “Hong Kong‑Macao Seminar on Climate Change Assessment” series. Attendees included representatives from the NSFC’s Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21 and the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office, experts from the Fifth National Assessment Report on Climate Change drafting team, as well as heads of relevant departments and university researchers from Hong Kong and Macao. The seminar featured keynote presentations and a roundtable discussion, during which experts shared insights on opportunities, challenges, and strategies for climate change response in the GBA, offering practical guidance and research directions for energy transition and climate governance in Hong Kong and Macao.
Experts recognize the effectiveness of the exchange platform
An expert from the Fifth National Assessment Report on Climate Change drafting team noted that the event helped clarify the direction and build consensus for the compilation of the Hong Kong and Macao section, further promoting coordinated research innovation in the climate field among the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao, and also injecting new momentum into the development of a climate-resilient GBA. Another participant applauded the seminar’s role in providing a platform for efficient and pragmatic exchange, giving a head start to deeper integration and cooperation on climate change across the GBA.
The main guests at the seminar included: Deputy Director Zhang Yongtao and Division Director Zhang Xian of the NSFC’s Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21; Director Zhao Chuang and Deputy Director Zhang Lin of the NSFC Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office; Vice President Zhu Yizhun of Macau University of Science and Technology; and Director Ma Yibing of the Macau Environmental Research Institute.
