To align with policy objectives and promote the application and market development of scientific research projects through the Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) evaluation mechanism, the Science and Technology Development Fund recently conducted evaluations of key research and development projects and organized TRLs training session. This initiative aims to enhance the holistic technology evaluation system for research projects centered on TRLs and deepen local researchers’ understanding of the TRLs assessment framework.
Conducting Evaluations for Key Research and Development Funding Projects
The Science and Technology Fund selected five key research and development funding projects as pilot cases. On December 3, it entrusted the evaluation center to organize experts to assess the achievement of project outcomes, TRLs levels, the conversion of research results, and industrialization prospects.
After evaluation, the expert panel concluded that the TRLs levels of all projects at completion had improved compared to their levels at the application stages. Several projects had conducted clinical studies or submitted registration applications to the Macau Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau. One project reached TRLs 8, and the information technology company incubated from this project has established operations in the Inno Valley Hengqin, actively progressing toward industrialization.
Experts recommended continuously strengthening the promotion of the TRLs evaluation system, enabling research teams to gain clearer insight and make reasonable judgment regarding project goals, work breakdown structures, the positioning of expected outcomes in the industrial chain, and industrialization prospects.
Providing Technology Readiness Level Training for Local Researchers
On the morning of December 2, the FDCT invited experts from the Center for Science and Technology Evaluation of the Ministry of Science and Technology to serve as instructors for a “Technology Readiness Level Assessment Training Seminar”. The training covered foundational theories and detailed guidelines of TRLs, illustrated the role of TRLs in project management and addressed the application of TRLs methods in managing project progress and related considerations through case studies. Over 130 representatives from local higher education institutions, enterprises, and other organizations participated in the training.
The FDCT will summarize the experience from this evaluation and training, continuously review and optimize the holistic technology evaluation system for research projects, and persist in conducting holistic assessments for key projects. These efforts aim to further facilitate the application and industrial development of scientific research outcomes.
