06/11/2025
The “Plaque Presentation Ceremony for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Joint Laboratory” was held in Macao on November 4. Vincent U, President of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), and Wang Yueqin, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, attended the ceremony and presented plaques to the two approved Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Joint Laboratories. Representatives and distinguished guests included Zhang Guanyu, representative of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Song Yonghua, President of the University of Macau (UM), Joseph Hun-wei Lee, President of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), Yau Yun Wah, Director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT), Teng Sio Hong, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), Lei Sai Ian, Deputy Director of the Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau (ISAF), Ieong Fu Weng, Member of the Administrative Committee of the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT), Huang Nanyin, Director of the Zhuhai Science and Technology Innovation Bureau, and Huang Zhongjian, Deputy Director of the Economic Development Bureau of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. All joined the ceremony as witnesses.

Vincent U, in his speech, stated that the two laboratories that were awarded plaques focus on Macao’s key technology sectors, such as integrated circuits and traditional Chinese medicine. This represents an important milestone in deepening regional science and technology innovation cooperation and in building an open community for synergistic innovation. This year, the Macao technology teams have been actively supporting the moderate diversification of the economy, focusing on advancing the application and commercialization of more scientific and technological achievements. Through initiatives such as “enterprises pose questions, and higher education institutions provide the solutions” and “reverse business matching,” they have facilitated a series of practical collaborations. In addition, the “Research and Development in Macao + Achievement Transformation in Hengqin” initiative has continued to make new progress. For example, during the platform’s construction phase, some of Macao’s research achievements have already been applied and transformed in Hengqin. Moving forward, Macao will continue to leverage its strengths to serve the nation’s needs and better integrate into the national development strategy.

In her speech, Wang Yueqin pointed out that Guangdong Province has established a high-level, multi-tiered laboratory system. These two laboratories will significantly enhance the basic and applied research capabilities of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (hereinafter referred to as the “Greater Bay Area”) in the fields of integrated circuits and traditional Chinese medicine, serving as a model for deep technological innovation cooperation in Guangdong, Macao, and the Greater Bay Area. In their future development, the laboratories are expected to focus on deepening synergistic innovation, attracting and nurturing talent, and promoting the application of research outcomes, aiming to become high-level innovation hubs and platforms. Today’s plaque presentation also marks a new starting point for science and technology exchanges and cooperation between Guangdong and Macao during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. It is hoped that Guangdong and Macao will jointly strengthen original innovation, tackle key core technologies, promote the deep integration of technological and industrial innovation, continuously foster new quality productive forces, and contribute to supporting the country’s pursuit of technological self-reliance and self-strengthening.

The laboratories awarded plaques on this occasion are the “Guangdong–Macao Joint Laboratory for Modular Chip Design and Testing” and the “Guangdong–Macao Joint Laboratory for Research on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Innovative Drugs Based on Naturally Derived Oligonucleotides.” In alignment with national strategies and the technological innovation and socio-economic development of the Greater Bay Area, and with a focus on key areas and research hotspots of joint interest to Guangdong and Macao, the two laboratories will carry out applied research and tackle critical core technologies in Macao’s areas of academic and technological strength. They will promote the application and commercialization of research outcomes, attract and cultivate talent teams, and engage in extensive collaborative exchanges, actively building high-level platforms for scientific and technological innovation. In addition, the joint laboratories led by Macao help expand the Macao’s scientific and technological resources, facilitate the application and transformation of research achievements in Hengqin, and promote the participation of Macao’s technology enterprises. By integrating the advantageous resources of Guangdong Province and Macao, the laboratories will conduct synergistic innovation and research, fostering deeper integration of industry and research, and driving industrial development through technological innovation.
