To promote the international development of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) industry and strengthen cooperation and exchanges with Portuguese-speaking countries, the FDCT held the “Forum on the Exchange of Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry among Portuguese-speaking Countries” at the Hengqin International Science and Technology Innovation Center on June 3, 2025. TCM experts and practitioners from São Paulo, Brazil, and Portugal were invited to share insights on the local TCM industry’s drug registration, regulatory standards, and market developments, attracting the participation of industry representatives, scholars, and relevant institutions.
Focusing on TCM Regulations and Market Opportunities in Portuguese-speaking Countries
The forum aimed to provide information on the TCM markets in Portuguese-speaking countries for Macao and Greater Bay Area enterprises, deepening the understanding of regulatory environments and market conditions, and facilitate international business expansion and the modernization and globalization of TCM. During the event, TCM experts and practitioners from São Paulo and Portugal explained in detail the local regulatory systems for TCM practice, registration processes for herbal and proprietary Chinese medicines, technical requirements, and supervisory policies, and analyzed market potentials. Representatives from the Pharmaceutical Supervision Bureau and Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Development Co., Ltd. shared Macao’s TCM regulatory policies and the pharmaceutical policies of Hengqin, providing practical references for participants.
Promoting TCM Industry Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries
Mr. Cheang Kun Wai, member of the Administrative Committee of FDCT, stated in his speech: “As an important platform for cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, Macao has been actively promoting the innovation and internationalization of TCM. Through this forum, we hope to deepen the industry’s understanding of the regulatory and market environment of Portuguese-speaking countries and build bridges for TCM industry cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.” Participating enterprises reflected that the event helped them better grasp market dynamics and regulatory requirements in Portuguese-speaking countries, which is crucial for formulating overseas expansion strategies and deepening cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries in the TCM sector.
The event was organized by the FDCT, co-organized by the Economic and Technological Development Bureau and the China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Science and Technology Exchange and Cooperation Center, and hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine of the University of Macau. The event was supported by the Pharmaceutical Supervision Bureau, Macao Da Heng Qin Co., Ltd., and Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Development Co., Ltd. Around 120 industry representatives from the Mainland, Macao, Brazil, and Portugal participated, actively engaging in discussions and interactions.
