Macao Young Researchers Pay an Exchange Tour to Greater Bay Area

        In an effort to enhance the understanding of developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into an international innovation and technology hub among Macao young researchers, facilitate the mutual exchange between Macao and the mainland researchers, also promote the S&T innovation collaboration between the two places, the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) commissioned the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Science (SIAT-CAS) to hold the “Training Course for Macao’s Young Workers in Science and Technology” 2023 from 5 to 9 June.
 
Combining research topic discussion and on-site investigation

        On the morning of 6 June, the training unveiled its opening ceremony, which was attended by Ip Kuai Lam, member of FDCT Administrative Committee; Xing Huaibin, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Strategic Planning under the Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC; Li Fangfang, Director of the Hong Kong, Macao & Taiwan Affairs office, Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS; Zhuang Xin, Deputy Division Chief of Policies and Regulations Division of Science, Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality; Liu Chenli, Vice President of the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of CAS; and Luo Runhua, member of the Industry Expert Committee of Qianhai Institute for Innovative Research of Shenzhen.

        Ip Kuai Lam said that, in line with the “1+4” appropriately diversified development strategy of the SAR government, FDCT has given priority to application-oriented research, enterprise R&D, transformation of research findings, the industry-university-research collaboration, and the integration with the Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, whilst constantly upgrading funding schemes to further enhance the support and driving force of science and technology. He underscored that talents are the key to S&T innovation, this year’s training focused on hot topics such as new opportunities and challenges for innovation and development in the Greater Bay Area. It is hoped that the trainees could cherish the learning opportunities and dedicate themselves to learning and mutual exchange so as to promote further collaboration.

        Li Fangfang briefed on a series of significant innovation achievements made by CAS in recent years, and the progress of S&T collaboration between CAS and Macao. She also said that CAS has attached great importance to the training, and invited officials from relevant national ministries and commissions, representatives from local governments as well as renowned experts and academicians to give lectures, hoping that Macao researchers could benefit from the training.

        According to Liu Chenli, SIAT has established a very close collaboration and exchange relationship with Macao, successively held three sessions of training, and launched a number of research projects with Macao universities in such fields as traditional Chinese medicine, artificial intelligence, brain science, also established a joint training mechanism for doctoral researchers, hope that Macao trainees could actively contribute to facilitate the future collaboration between Macao and the mainland.
 
Enhancing understanding of science and technology development in the Greater Bay Area cities and even the whole country

        This year’s training offers substantial knowledge in a compact schedule. The instructors gave lectures themed by the national S&T innovation planning and the development of an international innovation and technology hub; the S&T innovation policies of Shenzhen; the development and implementation of “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao; as well as the policies related to S&T innovation and talent cultivation of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, etc. In addition to classroom learning, the training also launched exchange tours to Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou and Foshan, with detailed activities including: sharing sessions of enterprises’ experiences in entrepreneurship and innovation and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cooperation projects; visits to BYD group and Midea Group, as well as on-site investigations in the Qianhai International Talent Hub, the Hong Kong and Macao Youth Entrepreneurship Base of Songshan Lake, the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion of CAS, the Bioland Lab of Guangzhou, and the National University Science Park of South China University of Technology, etc.

        The training was attended by 20 trainees from local enterprises, universities and hospitals.
