Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province and Macao Science and Technology Development Fund jointly investigate and research on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint laboratories

To further encourage the participation of Macao scientific research teams in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint laboratories and to discuss the arrangements for a new round of joint laboratory development, the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (GDSTC), together with the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), visited three universities in Macao to conduct investigation and research from May 11 to 12. Representatives of 13 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint laboratories introduced the work and development of the laboratories in detail. The two parties also conducted field investigations and research on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory of Human-Machine Intelligence-Synergy Systems, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory on Smart Cities, and the Guangdong-Macau Joint Laboratory for Advanced and Intelligent Computing, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory for Intelligent Micro-Nano Optoelectronic Technology of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory of Respiratory Infectious Diseases, the Cross-border Data Laboratory of the City University of Macau, and the Sino-Portugal Joint Laboratory in Science of Cultural Heritage Conservation Supported by The Belt and Road Initiative.
Through this joint investigation and research, both parties have strengthened their understanding of the 13 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint laboratories in Macao, laying a better foundation for cooperation in facilitating the development of joint laboratories and launching a new round of joint laboratory construction. Furthermore, through meetings and exchanges with various parties, methods to make better use of Macao's unique advantages under the “One Country, Two Systems”, give full play to the special role of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint laboratories, and enhance the effectiveness of the complementary advantages of the two places were also discussed, thereby implementing the strategic deployment of China, building a sustainable S&T innovation platform to promote S&T and economic development in the two places.
Wen Zewei, the Level 2 Inspector and Yang Huifang, Director of the Division of Exchange and Cooperation of the GDSTC, Chan Kong On, Senior Manager of the FDCT, and other 8 fellows participated in the investigation and research.
The development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao joint laboratories is a plan launched by the Guangdong Province to fully implement the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, focusing on the development of an international innovation and technology (“I&T”) hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the actual needs of industrial development. The plan started two batches of 20 approved developments in 2019 and 2020, of which 13 were participated by scientific research institutions participated of Macao.
