A Preparatory Meeting of Award Judging Committee of Macao Science and Technology Award Held
11/04/2022
In accordance with the Regulations on Science and Technology Awards, the Macao Science and Technology Award is issued every two years, and the evaluation work for the Macao Science and Technology Award 2022 has now begun. To ensure smoother evaluation procedures, the Award Judging Committee of the Macao Science and Technology Award held an online preparatory meeting on April 1. Attended the meeting were Chairman of the Award Judging Committee Yang Wei and its members Hao Yue, Tsui Lap-Chee, Mei Hong, Yeung Tsun Man Eric, Yang Baofeng and Han Yingduo. Moreover, representatives from the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) including President of the Administrative Committee Chan Wan Hei, and its members Cheang Kun Wai and Ip Kuai Lam, Technology Consultant Liu Lianggang and Senior Manager of the Science and Technology Development and Cooperation Department Chan Kong On also attended the meeting as nonvoting delegates.

At the meeting, Chan Wan Hei expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Chairman and all members of the judging committee for their support for the development of science and technology in Macao and the Macao Science and Technology Award. He introduced the adjustments made by the FDCT to align with the policy priorities of the SAR government, in which the funding system has been actively optimized since last year, focusing on the support of applied research, promoting the transformation of results, encouraging industry-university-research cooperation, and supporting the R&D among enterprises.

Subsequently, Chan Kong On briefed the meeting’s audience on the application and formality examination of the Macao Science and Technology Award 2022. FDCT received a total of 71 applications for the award, which include 44 for the Natural Science Award, 15 for the Technological Invention Award and 12 for the Science and Technology Progress Award; whereas, in terms of categories of the first major unit which completed the project, 62 applications from universities, 4 from enterprises, 3 from hospitals and 2 from others were received. FDCT has conducted a formality examination on the application projects, of which 69 applications require supplementary information.

Members of the committee gave recognition to the preparatory work done by the FDCT, and discussed the evaluation procedures. They believed that the evaluation of the Macao Science and Technology Award has established a relatively standardized procedure, and this year’s evaluation work is still based on this procedure, always adhering to the principle of “fairness, equity and openness” to select outstanding projects. In addition, members also said that, although the number of applications for the Technological Invention Award and the Science and Technology Progress Award has increased, it is still small compared with that of the Natural Science Award, therefore, consideration should be given to the introduction of some incentive measures to strengthen the enthusiasm of science and technology workers.

The list of those who have passed the formality examination has been published on FDCT’s website. With the assistance of the National Office for Science and Technology Awards, FDCT has obtained a list of peer experts and is currently conducting external peer evaluation.
