The First Roadshow and Matchmaking Meeting Between Macao Scientific Research Projects and Mainland Enterprises Is Held Where 16 Letters of Intent for Cooperation Are Signed
16/12/2021

The “Industry-University-Research Collaboration Roadshow and Matchmaking Meeting Between Mainland China and Macao” (hereinafter referred to as the Roadshow and Matchmaking Meeting) was held in Macao for the first time. The two-day event coincided with the “Science and Technology Week 2021 cum Exhibition of Achievements in Science and Technology Innovation” (hereinafter referred to as the Science and Technology Week) in the same venue to provide synergy and facilitate the transformation of scientific research achievements in Macao.

The Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) arranged for 29 funded scientific research project teams from the University of Macau (UM) and the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) to match with more than 50 science and technology enterprises and venture capital firms in cities of the Greater Bay Area and Fujian, Anhui, Hunan and Shandong provinces, and carried out more than 130 meetings and negotiations, of which 50 meetings showed that both sides were interested in further understanding each other, with 16 groups having signed letters of intent for cooperation.

Cross-regional industry-university-research partnership successively soliciting participants and carrying out roadshows and negotiations to facilitate cooperation

The Roadshow and Matchmaking Meeting was jointly organized by the FDCT, the China Science and Technology Exchange Center (CSTEC) and the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (GDSTC). This time, the event successively solicited participants and carried out the offline roadshows, matchmaking sessions and negotiation. FDCT earlier sorted out the funded projects in recent years, and invited teams of projects with prospects for technology transfer and transformation to participate in the event, in which relevant scientific research projects are divided into three fields, including "Biomedicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine", "Information Communication and Integrated Circuits", and "Energy Conservation, Environmental Protection, New Materials, and Advanced Manufacturing".

In addition, the mainland partners also promoted the scientific research achievements of the Macao projects to the Greater Bay Area and several Mainland provinces to solicit innovative entities such as enterprises, venture capital firms, and scientific research institutions that are willing to come to Macao to participate in on-site roadshows and matchmaking sessions.

At the Roadshow and Matchmaking Meeting, the scientific research project teams first conducted roadshows to display the project achievements; then they were given the chance to carry out one-to-one matchmaking sessions and negotiation, make further communication, increase mutual understanding and establish contacts with enterprises, laying a foundation for technology transformation.

Participants agree that the mode of the event increases the efficiency for matchmaking

The scientific research project teams of Macao and representatives of Mainland enterprises generally agree with the mode of this event, and hope that the organizers will assist in the follow-up to achieve industry-university-research collaboration.

UM’s Professor Ouyang pointed out that the mode of this event is excellent as it could foster scientific research teams to match with the industry. Moreover, all enterprise representatives could obtain initial understandings on the scientific research achievements through the roadshows, and interested enterprises could also engage in negotiations to match with scientific research teams, effectively saving time and increasing the efficiency of matchmaking. Through the event, six enterprises have been matched with counterpart scientific research teams, and contact information has been established between each party for in-depth communication later on, Professor Ouyang said. It is suggested that similar events can be held in the Mainland in the future, or live broadcast can also be carried out to expand the coverage of the audience.

MUST’s Professor Luo believed that the effectiveness of the event is ideal as it has effectively strengthened communication with counterpart enterprises through roadshows and matchmaking sessions, and suggested that more similar events should be held. In addition to matching with 4 enterprises, further understandings on the needs of enterprises have also been built through the event, which is of great help for the next step of the implementation of application research, Professor Luo added.

Miss Zhan, an enterprise representative, thanked the organizers for providing this opportunity for matchmaking and believed that the preliminary work between Macao and the Mainland was sufficiently considered and making matches in advance also enable industry-university-research partnerships to be more accurate. Miss Zhan expected that the time for meeting and negotiation will be extended in the future, so that the interested units can exchange with the project teams more thoroughly; and she is also glad to have successfully matched with a scientific research achievement and signed a letter of intent for cooperation at the event.

Miss Chan, also an enterprise representative, said that she has matched with three high-quality biomedical scientific research projects with prospects for industrialization. Through this visit to Macao, she learned that the Macao universities have strong scientific research strengths. She also claimed that she will keep paying attention to Macao's scientific research achievements, and hopes that the organizers can arrange for Macao's scientific research project teams to engage in matchmaking sessions in the Mainland in the future.

Driving public capital to Macao’s high-quality scientific research projects; and realizing the transfer and transformation of scientific research achievements

FDCT hopes that the Roadshow and Matchmaking Meeting will encourage the Macao's scientific research achievements to match with technology enterprises and capital in the Greater Bay Area, realize technology transfer and transformation, as well as drive public capital to high-quality scientific research projects in Macao.

After accumulating experiences through this Matchmaking Meeting, FDCT will follow up on ideally matched projects, and plan to hold similar events to deepen cooperation and exchanges, and promote the transformation of Macao’s scientific research achievements on a continuous basis.
