The 15th Meeting of Mainland and Macao Science and Technology Cooperation Committee Successfully Held in Macao

The 15th Meeting of Mainland and Macao Science and Technology Cooperation Committee was successfully held in the morning of June 18th in Macao. It was attended by Huang Wei, Vice Minister of Science and Technology of China, Lei Wai Nong, Macao’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Chan Wan Hei, President of the Administrative Committee of Macao’s Science and Technology Development Fund, and Tai Kin Ip, Director of Macao’s Economic Bureau.
 
In his speech, Huang Wei said Macao had achieved remarkable results in its battle against the pandemic through the community’s cooperation and coordination of the SAR government under the support of the central government. It fully demonstrates the vitality and advantage of the ‘one country, two systems” policy. He also praised Macao for its achievements in improving its technological innovation and development policies and measures, its science and technology cooperation with mainland China and many other aspects. Huang suggested that the city speed up the building of a “China-Portuguese-Speaking Countries Science and Technology Exchange and Achievement Transformation Center” and make the most of the city’s unique platform role, while further supporting its S&T development and promoting the transformation and transfer of its technological achievements. Besides, the city should enhance its S&T and cultural exchanges with other regions, encouraging more young people from Macao to enter the S&T industry; help bring the S&T development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to the next level and better integrate itself into national development.

Lei Wai Nong remarked that the pandemic had further alerted the community to the importance of Macao achieving moderate economic diversity and the urgency of technological innovation. Having treated technological innovation as a primary driving force of the city’s economic diversification, the government is going to focus on the transformation and industrialization of the technological achievements made by the four State Key Laboratories, continue to foster Macao’s cooperation with mainland China in achievement transformation and Industry-University-Research cooperation as well as accelerate the integration of Macao into the Greater Bay Area’s technology and innovation regime and national development. The government will also strengthen the cooperation between the two sides in multiple aspects through the Committee. In particular, it will seek to widen and deepen their S&T exchange and collaboration, thereby making a greater contribution to the technological development of Macao and the country.

Chan Wan Hei briefed on the work undertaken by the Committee’s liaison office on its behalf, including that regarding the expansion of the Centrally-financed S&T Funds to Macao, the two sides’ joint scientific research projects, the construction of scientific research platforms, technologist exchanges, and training, the review, and approval of S&T award applications, the support for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a high-quality technology and innovation hub and the like as well as the achievements made in these aspects.

The Committee also listened to the report on the country’s medium to long term plan for S&T development, its technological innovation and development in the 14th Five-year Plan period, enhanced cooperation between mainland China and Macao in technological innovation among other issues by the representatives of relevant departments on the mainland side of the organization. Tai Kin Ip briefed on the consideration for Macao’s S&T development and preliminary ideas for establishing the “China-Portuguese-Speaking Countries Science and Technology Exchange and Achievement Transformation Center” in Macao.

On the other hand, the attendees of the meeting also reviewed and approved the Committee’s work plan for the next year. The Committee will, in the coming year, continue to facilitate the expansion of the Centrally-financed S&T Funds to Macao; further refine R&D incubators, launch S&T and cultural exchanges, and relevant training; keep fostering research projects, giving S&T awards and promoting exchanges and collaborations in other areas in addition to supporting the upgrade of the Greater Bay Area into a premium international innovation and technology hub.
