The 2nd China (Hengqin) Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship Competition Ends with Resounding Success

Jointly hosted by the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area and the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) of the Macau Special Administrative Region, the grand final of the 2nd China (Hengqin) Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship Competition (hereinafter referred to as the ‘CHSTEC’) was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hengqin. After series of fierce competition, the project of the “Research and Development of Advanced FinFET High-speed Interface IP” of the Akrostar Technology Limited won the special prize and is awarded with a subsidy of RMB 100 million for research and development.
Jointly hosted by the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area and the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) of the Macau Special Administrative Region, the grand final of the 2nd China (Hengqin) Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship Competition (hereinafter referred to as the ‘CHSTEC’) was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hengqin. The nine judges in the grand final of the CHSTEC include, the Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) of the United States and Chairman of the Shenzhen Ionova Life Science Co., Ltd., Sun Yongkui; Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), Dean and Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Meng Qinghu; member of the Legislative Council of the Macau Special Administrative Region and Vice President of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), Pang Chuan; as well as experts from the relevant venture capital investment institutions. After almost 6 hours of fierce competition, 18 projects have come out among the best in the CHSTEC, with Akrostar Technology Limited wining the special prize, Zhuhai Geehy Semiconductor Co.,Ltd. winning first prize, and Amicro Semiconductor Co., Ltd. and Zhuhai Hengle Medical Technology Co., Ltd. winning the second prize.
Zeng Keqiang, Chairman and Co-CEO of the Akrostar Technology Limited, was extremely excited after winning the 2nd CHSTEC. He said that there are nearly 80 key R&D members in the Akrostar at present, and he is planning to establish more than 150 R & D teams in Hengqin and Macau over the next five years. He also indicated that the subsidy of RMB 100 million will be used for R & D personnel investment, procurement of instruments and equipment, chip tape-out testing and other expenses. "We are the strongest within the whole industry in terms of technology reserves, talent teams, market entry and financial strength. IP is the source of the innovation of hard technology. We could make the chip design simpler and innovation easier and help to promote the development of the entire chip industry through the innovation of source technology. We are planning to bring the resources of the entire chip industry to Hengqin. Meanwhile, we also gather a complete IP industry team so that we could have intensive cooperation with the the ASIC & System State Key Laboratory of the University of Macau (UM) to build a strong team in Hengqin and Macau, which will become a benchmark for cooperation between the two cities", said Mr. Zeng.

Wu Chuangwei, Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area, extended his congratulations to the winning teams. He said that the 2nd CHSTEC attracted 2278 projects, 942 of which have successfully registered, with 123 projects from the special Macau channel. The Hengqin New Area has held two consecutive CHSTEC, which has fully demonstrated the vitality of science and technology innovation, attracted a large number of projects of high quality and standard, and gathered a large number of talents to start businesses and bring innovation in Hengqin.

Cheang Kun Wai, member of the Committee of the FDCT of the Macau SAR government, indicated that the FDCT has collaborated with the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area this time to host the CHSTEC and set up a special Macau channel, so as to encourage scientific research teams in Macau to participate in the competition actively and promote the exchange, cooperation and interaction between Macau’s scientific researchers and foreign research units. Holding the CHSTEC is conducive to further intensive cooperation between Zhuhai and Macau through Hengqin, which also serves as an important measure for Macau and Hengqin to actively participate in the development of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macau science and technology innovation corridor, expedite the development of the science and technology innovation industry, and foster quality economic development. According to the results of the CHSTEC, six projects of the Macau special channel, including that of the Guangzhou Kangrui Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd. and the Zhenye (Macau) New Material Technology Co., Ltd., won the winning awards.

Sun is also particularly grateful to the Hengqin New Area for its support for innovation and entrepreneurship. The Hengqin Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship Competition is a very good incentive which can effectively foster the development of Hengqin's high-tech, biomedical and medical industries.
It is reported that, in order to continuously enhance the influence of the CHSTEC and introduce the innovation policies and good business environment of Hengqin New Area, the Organizing Committee of the CHSTEC has successively organized 8 offline promotion conferences in Macau, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Xi'an and other cities and regions, as well as 6 online special promotion conferences on 4 fields of the CHSTEC with Macau and Hong Kong. In November this year, the Organizing Committee of the CHSTEC invited 70 enterprises that have reached the grand final to gather in Hengqin to attend the “Innovation and Reception Conference for Going into Hengqin”, so as to comprehensively promote its business environment and the development of Macau’s science and technology industry to the participating enterprises. The conference also plays the role as a ‘bridge’ to connect the enterprises with well-known venture capital investment institutions. After nearly three years of brand building and being carefully cultivated since it was first held in 2018, the Hengqin Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship Competition has already become a feast for science and technology innovation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, and has introduced ‘elites’ from many new industries to Hengqin. The winning projects of the 1st CHSTEC, including that of the Pachira Information Technology Co. Ltd., the QXP Technologies Incorporated and the Increasepharm Corporation Limited, have settled in Hengqin, and the project has also maintained positive growth.
Having successfully gone through its transformation, the Greater Bay Area will continue to thrive. The Hengqin Scientific and Technological Entrepreneurship Competition serves as an important measure for Hengqin to assist with the moderate economic diversification of Macau, and a powerful footnote for the collaborative development of the industries in Hengqin and Macau. While helping Hengqin to cultivate an influential industrial ecology, the CHSTEC also foster the building of the important stronghold for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macau science and technology innovation corridor for Macau and Hengqin.
