To Build Macao into a Centre for Science Popularisation and Exchange in the Greater Bay Area: Science and Technology Week Received Nearly 28,000 Visitors
15/10/2019
The “2019 Science and Technology Week and National Science and Technology Innovation Exhibition”, organised by the Technology Committee (CCT), supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the People’s Republic of China and coordinated by the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), was concluded successfully on 13 October 2019. This year’s event received generous support from the China Science and Technology Exchange Centre (CSTEC), the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre (CPTTM) and the Macao Science Centre (MSC), in addition to local colleges, universities, primary schools, secondary schools, associations and mainland organisations. The five-day event attracted a record high of nearly 28,000 visitors.

The Science and Technology Week is the largest event and an important platform for science popularisation in Macao. A diverse array of activities organised by CCT and co-ordinated by FDCT with the support of other organisations were available this year. Among them, the “Chinese Civilization & Technology Innovation Exhibition” displayed about 40 technological innovations and models in respect of aerospace engineering, polar expedition and deep-sea exploration and offered interactive VR experiences. As one of the biggest highlights of the exhibition, the permanent maglev train model driven by electronic screw propellers caught the attention of both adults and children alike. The VR experiences of space station roaming, Mount Everest climbing, and simulated racing were also very popular with visitors. At the “Local Science Popularisation Achievements Exhibition”, over 40 projects supported by FDCT were on display. In order to encourage students to participate actively in science popularisation activities, college students and pupils were brought in to serve as commentators and secondary school students used multi-media devices to record and disseminate on-site activities. Also available were three themed seminars, a sharing seminar of international summer courses, a briefing session on the Antarctic Pole scientific expedition, 20 workshops with an awarding ceremony for the “Science Popularisation Short Video Competition – Macau Regional Competition”.

Jointly organised by FDCT and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ), coordinated by the Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion of the University of Macau (UM), and co-organised by the Association for Promotion of Science and Technology of Macau, the Macau Institute of Engineers and the Macao Innovation and Invention Association, the “2019 Macau Youth Innovation Challenge” was held during the Science and Technology Week. Academician Shu Degan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Xu Aoao of the International Academy of Astronautics and Professor Iu Vai Pan of the University of Macau were invited as director judges, Professor Xue Quan, Dean of the School of Electronic and Information Engineering of the South China University of Technology, as chief judge, and over 40 professors and experts from Macao, Hong Kong and Shenzhen as judges. Together with their 51 projects, 127 students from 16 local schools participated in the competition. As the first part of the reform of the selection system, this year’s competition aimed to select excellent students for the “Junior S&T Talents Training Program” jointly launched by FDCT and DSEJ, under which targeted guidance and training would be offered and the most excellent projects would be singled out in a second round of selection to take part in high-level national and international science popularisation competitions. Above all, this year’s competition was a process of “selection, training, and re-selection” with a view to improving the technological capacities of outstanding Macao students and enabling better performance in high-level science and technology competitions.

In order to promote exchange and cooperation on science popularisation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, this year’s Science and Technology Week also invited teams from the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Guangdong Science Centre to give performances on science popularisation. Teams from the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association and the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology were also invited to Macao to participate in the “2019 Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Youth Innovation Challenge” organised by FDCT.

In order to bring into full play the role of the Science and Technology Week as a platform, a wide range of competitions and activities were held by several other organisations, including “The 2nd Macao Secondary Students Mobile Web Design Skill Competition” and “The 6th Macau Secondary School Students Information Technology Knowledge Quiz Competition” organised by CPTTM, the “2019 WRO Macau International Invitational Tournament” organised by the Macau Science and Technology Innovation Education Association (MSTIEA), and a rule explanation session for the “RoboMaster 2020 Macau Youth Robotics Competition” organised by the Smart City Alliance Association of Macau.

Teams from Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and other cities in the Greater Bay Area and over 20 countries and regions participated in “The 7th Macao International Innovation and Invention Expo” organised by the Macao Innovation and Invention Association. College students from Hong Kong and Zhuhai were also invited to compete with their local counterparts at the “Smart Cities Debate Invitational Tournament” hosted by the Debating and Speech Culture Association of Macao.

At the “Technology and Calligraphy” session organised by the Macau Research Association of Calligraphy Education and supported by the Chinese Educators Association of Macau, the Macao Catholic Schools Association and the Associação Educativa da Função Pública de Macau, nearly 2,700 participants, along with robotic arms for calligraphy purposes, were gathered to challenge the Guinness World Record – the “largest calligraphy lesson” – by writing the Chinese character for longevity together at the same time, which they successfully completed. That was the first mega event ever held in Macao under the theme of technology and calligraphy to showcase the extraordinary charm of combining technology with culture, to encourage people, especially young people, to value traditional Chinese culture, and to increase Macanese people’s understanding of national advances in science and technology.

CCT and FDCT were pleased with the activities held during this year’s Science and Technology Week and were thankful to the MOST, the CSTEC, all participating organisations, and all walks of life for their generous support, without which the success of the activities would be impossible. Going ahead, FDCT pledges greater efforts to promote the popularisation of science and technology and enhance cooperation in this respect in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, in an effort to build Macao into a centre for science popularisation in the Greater Bay Area.
