The Science and Technology Development Fund held a briefing on three funding schemes at the Science Museum at 3:30 pm on June 18. After the launch of two special funding schemes for post-doctoral and scientific research equipment at the beginning of the year, the Science and Technology Development Fund was to launch three new funding schemes, including the joint fundings with the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and with Guangdong Science and Technology Department, and Macao’s key R&D funding projects. These funding schemes serve as efforts to support Macao's technological development from different levels and multiple directions. The brief meeting was presided by Administrative Committee Chair Ma Chi Ngai Frederico, Administrative Committee member Cheang Kun Wai, Senior Manager of the Funding Services Department Chu Iek Man, Senior Manager of the Science and Technology Development Research Department Ip Kuai Lam, and attended by nearly 100 representatives from universities, colleges and enterprises.

Ma Chi Ngai Frederico said that the Science and Technology Development Fund and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology had signed a cooperation agreement in 2017, and the joint funding program was firstly launched this year, which was believed to promote the scientific cooperation between Portugal and Macao. The cooperation with Guangdong Science and Technology Department is an initiative to implement the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area”. The plan requires either party’s leading application unit to be an enterprise, so as to promote the industry-university-research cooperation between the two regions. This year's policy strengthens the support for the deployment in key areas, and after research and in-depth discussions with universities, the Science and Technology Development Fund has decided to focus on supporting three major areas of Macao's strengths, namely Traditional Chinese medicine, precision medicine and artificial intelligence. Experts from the Ministry of Science and Technology have been entrusted to the preparation of guidelines.

The joint funding program with the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology has been open for applications since June 12, and will end on July 26. This program is in support of the studies in marine pollution and marine biotechnology, with a maximum fund of one million dollars for each project and a funding period up to three years. The joint funding program with Guangdong Science and Technology Department supports the industry-university-research programs including key electronic information, biomedicine (traditional Chinese medicine), energy conservation and environmental protection, and smart city and ocean. The maximum funding for each application is 1.3 million dollars with a maximum funding period of two years. For Macao’s key R&D funding programs, the maximum funding for each traditional Chinese medicine and artificial intelligence projects is 15 million dollars, and 20 million dollars for precision medical treatment, and the funding period is no more than three years. The application period for the last two funding schemes will be released after completion of related procedures.
