Award Ceremony of the Macao Science and Technology Awards 2020

The award ceremony of the Macao Science and Technology Awards 2020 took place in the afternoon of October 7that the Grand Auditorium of Macao Cultural Center. Participants included Lei Wai Nong, representative of the Chief Executive and the Secretary for Economy and Finance; Yao Jian, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government, Ran Bo, Director of the Department of Policy Research under the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macao SAR; Raimundo do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works and vice president of the Science and Technology Council of Macao and Chan Wan Hei, President of the Administrative Committee under the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) among others. They presented the awards to the winners respectively. The event also saw the participation of nearly 300 representatives of the organizations of the central government in Macao, Macao’s government departments, local tertiary education institutions, research institutes, science and technology associations, etc.
 
In his speech, Lei Wai Nong congratulated all the winners and gave sincere gratitude and great respect to local science and technology workers. He said that Macao had made steady headway in science and technology development after years of efforts by the sector with the support of the central government and the MSAR government since the city’s handover. The resulting achievements can be used for offering greater support to local industries and the city’s economy as a whole. He emphasized that the government would continue to improve the mechanism that enables the translation of technological achievements into products and accelerate the building of the development model featuring organic integration of the efforts of industry, academic and research sectors for technology to play a more active role in helping Macao achieve moderate economic diversity, driving the city’s economic growth, transforming corporate marketing and management models, improving service quality for further development among other respects. At last, he urged on members of the science and technology sector to seize the opportunities arising from the technology innovation and development within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area to enhance Macao’s advantages coming of the country’s support by further tapping into the role of technology innovation conducive to the city’s sustainable economic development.
 
 In her speech on behalf of the winners, Mok Seng Peng, associate professor of the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Macau, said she had seen leaping improvement in Macao’s science and technology research level these ten years after she returned to Macao, and the massive inflow of excellent researchers have injected new impetus into the territory. She thanked the central government and the SAR government as well as those from different social spectrums for their substantial support to local science and technology workers. In the end, she encouraged the youths to have the courage to work in the science and technology industry while suggesting that members of the sector use their talent with Macao’s needs in mind and work more closely with the people of the Greater Bay area to commercialize research results for the greater good of the public.

A total of 16 projects won the Macao Science and Technology Awards 2020, having passed three rigorous reviews, namely, a review by experts in corresponding fields, the preliminary review by the award evaluation committee and the final review through a review conference. The SAR government promulgated Regulations on Science and Technology Awards in March 2011. The Awards give credit to those who make contribution in Macao’s science and technology activities. On the other hand, 30 post-graduates received the Scientific and Technological R&D Award for Postgraduates upon recommendations from local tertiary education institutions and after passing FDCT’s close review.
