FDCT President Ma Chi Ngai Attends the Launching Ceremony of “Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award” and “Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award Foundation”

The launching ceremony of the “Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award” and “Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award Foundation” took place on 28th August in Guangzhou, China. Zhong Nanshan, holder of the “Medal of the Republic” and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wang Hongyan, Permanent Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee under the Chinese Communist Youth League (CCYL) and chairperson of All-China Youth Federation, and Li Hongjun, deputy governor of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, participated in and respectively gave a speech in the events.

The Award in question was established by the Chinese Association of Young Scientists and Technologists with the approval of the Secretariat of the Central Committee under CCYL and the authorization of Zhong Nanshan to offer impetus and guidance for the youth in science and technology innovation while the Award’s Foundation was formed by China Foundation for Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment. The Award will be open to nationals under the age of 38 and are working in medicine, life science and other science and technology fields. It will be granted to a maximum of 10 workers in these fields every year. The Foundation will not only endorse the selection of award recipients and presenting of the award but will also provide great support to the youth in innovation and delivering excellence in life science, for health and epidemic prevention efforts by grassroots people, science and technology innovation exchanges among the youth as well as fights against poverty, rural revitalization, entrepreneurship, social employment, CCYL’s mission and so on.

In his speech, Zhong emphasized that nurturing science and technology workers in life science is not easy, so he hopes the Award will encourage young people to have inspirations and strong passion. “training a public health worker, a science and technology worker in life science is not easy at all given the relatively long [training] cycle, so I am so glad that Guangdong has had such an opportunity to set up the Award, which starts from medicine and life science. I hope that young people will not just have self-discipline, but also have aspirations in the present situation. They should not just aspire but should also act on their aspirations. They should not just have passion, but it should, more importantly, also be strong!”

Ma Chi Ngai, President of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), was present in the launching ceremony. He delivered a speech expressing high respect for Zhong for his outstanding contributions to the country’s combat against the pandemic and sincere gratitude for his generous support for the Macao SAR government in its epidemic prevention and combat efforts. Besides, he mentioned FDCT had urgently solicited research proposals on response to the pandemic crisis from local tertiary education institutions and science and technology enterprises in February to help the city better cope with the situation. They received 74 proposals in a matter of 10 days and eventually funded 26 of them, including 22 from the educational institutions and 4 from the enterprises, which involved the total amount of MOP10,076,900.00.

Meanwhile, FDCT has been striving to promote cooperation and exchanges between Macao and mainland China in science and technology development. For example, the Fund enhanced collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province in working toward breakthroughs in scientific research on epidemic prevention and control in February. FDCT and the Department respectively funded two projects on combat against the pandemic from the University of Macau and the Macau University of Science and Technology. At last, Ma expressed his wish that the Foundation will grow and be able to support more young people seeking to bring innovation and deliver excellence in life science.
