20/11/2019
At the invitation of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao, the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) assisted in holding a briefing on EU scientific research funding in Macao on November 19. Philippe Vialatte, Minister Counselor of the EU delegation to China, and his party of seven attended the event. Cheang Kun Wai, member of the Administrative Committee of the FDCT; Liu Lianggang, Technology Consultant of the FDCT; and Ip Kuai Lam, Senior Manager of the FDCT, met with guests and attended the briefing.

Cheang Kun Wai welcomed the EU delegation during the meeting. He briefly introduced the operation of the FDCT and the status quo of cooperation between local colleges and universities, scientific research institutions and counterparts at home and abroad. He said the FDCT actively promoted foreign scientific research cooperation among institutions in Macao, launching a number of joint funding schemes, including its provision of matching funds of the EU Horizon2020. In addition, he also briefed the EU delegation on the problems encountered by Macao researchers participating in EU projects.

Philippe Vialatte thanked the FDCT for hosting his delegation and helping organize the briefing. He responded to the problems encountered by Macao’s scientific research institutions in applying for the Horizon2020 project and pointed out that this briefing was an ideal opportunity for exchange. He hoped the scientific research teams in Macao could know more about various types of EU funding, promote their cooperation with the EU, and improve the success rate of applications in the future.

After the meeting, the EU delegation held a briefing. The EU's "Horizon2020", the upcoming Horizon Europe project, the Marie Curie Actions and the EURAXESS, as well as the funding programs for scientific research cooperation in Germany, Switzerland, Poland and other countries were all touched upon. Philippe Vialatte encouraged Macao researchers to strengthen ties with their EU counterparts and carry out more cooperative research. Nearly 80 teachers, researchers and graduate students from eight colleges and universities in Macao attended the briefing. They showed keen interest in scientific research cooperation with the EU and inquired on many points. In response to the questions, the EU representatives gave their answers and explanations individually.

Members of the delegation to Macao also included Eva Valle Lagares, Counselor of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao; Jens Hofmann, Science and Technology Counselor of the German Embassy in China; Aleksander Dańda, Counselor of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Hong Kong; Jonas Thürig, Deputy Head of the Section of Science, Technology and Education of the Embassy of Switzerland in China; Halldor Berg, representative of the EURAXESS Links China; and Sami Al Daghistani, representative of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao.
