According to article 8 of Basic Rules for Policies Regarding Science and Technology (Law nº 9/2000), the Government of Macao Special Administrative Region will reward the organizations or individuals who make great contribution to the research and development of science and technology. In the 2008 policy address of the Macao SAR Government also proposed establishing a science and technology award scheme. Therefore, the Science and Technology Development Fund (hereinafter referred to as the “FDCT”) has preliminarily formulated a science and technology award scheme in the first quarter of this year and then distributed it to the Macao governmental departments, institutions of higher education, research institutes and groups of science and technology, with the aim of collecting opinions of the scientific and technological personnel widely.

After making in-depth research on these opinions and discussing them for several times in the meetings of both the FDCT Executive Committee and Program Advisory Committee, we modified the original program and perfected the program content. In this version of the award scheme, the science and technology award to be established includes:

• Scientific and Technological Invention Award;
• Excellent Scientific Research Award;
• Science and Technology R&D Award for Postgraduates.

The proposed award scheme is now under public consultation. The consultation period continues until 30 November 2008. Please send your comments to FDCT by post, fax or email.
